About
Theresa Gewering is a structural biologist in the research group of Dr Erica Ollman Saphire at La Jolla Institute for Immunology. Her research interests include using high-resolution cryo-EM towards elucidating the conformational landscape of proteins in interaction with their binding partners, gaining new insights into the visualization and analysis of glycoprotein-antibody complexes, deepening our understanding of antibody evolution and critical antibody features, and extending the breadth of monoclonal antibodies for robust and long-lasting therapies against rapidly evolving viruses.
Previously she was a graduate student at University Osnabrueck, Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, and Ruhr University Bochum. She was also an international student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa.

approach%20for%20sample%20quality%20control%20in%20the%20early%20phases%20of%20a%20project.%20Optimization%20in%20negative%20stain%20can%20be%20critical%20not%20only%20for%20cryo-EM%2C%20but%20also%20for%20X-ray%20crystallography%2C%20as%20highlighted%20for%20example%20by%20studies%20on%20GPCR%20complexes%20%28Kang%20et%20al.%2C%202015%3B%20Rasmussen%20et%20al.%2C%202012%29.%20However%2C%20when%20not%20done%20carefully%20and%20interpreted%20correctly%2C%20negative%20stain%20can%20be%20prone%20to%20artifacts.%20A%20typical%20problem%2C%20which%20is%20often%20overlooked%20in%20the%20interpretation%20of%20EM%20data%20of%20small%20membrane%20proteins%2C%20is%20the%20background%2C%20caused%20by%20empty%20detergent%20micelles%2C%20as%20it%20can%20be%20easily%20confused%20with%20detergent%20embedded%20protein%20samples.%20To%20counteract%20this%20ubiquitous%20problem%2C%20we%20present%20a%20case%20study%20on%20commonly%20used%20detergents.We%20show%20that%20most%20detergents%20produce%20significant%20background%20in%20negative%20stain%20EM%2C%20even%20below%20nominal%20critical%20micelle%20concentration%20%28CMC%29.%20Unawareness%20of%20such%20artefacts%20can%20lead%20to%20misinterpretation%20of%20sample%20quality%20and%20homogeneity.%20We%20hope%20that%20this%20study%20can%20serve%20as%20a%20template%20to%20evaluate%20images%20in%20the%20early%20phases%20of%20a%20project.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222018-09-01%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1016%5C%2Fj.jsb.2018.05.008%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221047-8477%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com%5C%2Fscience%5C%2Farticle%5C%2Fpii%5C%2FS1047847718301321%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22EENXQ3XN%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222025-04-22T22%3A23%3A01Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
