Michael Lawrence

Institution Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research

Mike Lawrence obtained his PhD in Theoretical Physics in 1980 from the University of Cape Town (UCT), studying proton tunnelling in ferroelectric materials. He then changed his research focus to structural biology, doing a post-doc at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England (1981-2) in the group of Dr Phil Evans. He was briefly Director of the Electron Microscopy Unit at UCT before moving to CSIRO Division of Protein Chemistry in Melbourne in 1988 where he joined the structural biology team of Dr Peter Colman. In 2007 he moved to the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, also in Melbourne, where he now heads a laboratory studying the structural biology of insulin’s interaction with its receptor.
